Garden Update and Goals

by Rebekahcooked up on July 20, 2011

This week is a big week for our garden. It is time for our first tomato!

There’s not much to show scale here, but I would imagine that this guy is about three to four inches across and two inches tall. And perfect! I can’t wait to pick it… I’m giving it another day or so to be 100% red.

Also worth noting, our garden is getting REALLY tall. Granted, our beds are probably raised about 2 feet off the ground. But this is a shot taken from eye level, and I am 5’5″.

We also have our first baby pepper growing! The pepper plants have been a bit of a conundrum. They are tall, they look healthy and they have plenty of flowers, but this is the only pepper we’ve seen. Granted, it’s the middle of summer and there’s a lot of growth that will probably happen yet. But depending on how these guys do, we may want to make some changes (more sun? less? etc) for next year. Do you guys have any pepper-growing tips?

And finally, looking to the weeks ahead, we are going to be swimming in tomatoes. There are lots and lots of babies. Initially out of the four plants, only the “early girl” had any fruit at all, but now they all have little ones and they seem to be growing pretty quickly. Hope y’all like salsa!

I’ve decided to put together a list of goals for our garden – and maybe you guys can help me out with this. Here are the things I want to do:

  • Trim down the cilantro. That thing is ridiculously huge. And look into harvesting the seeds!
  • Research what we can do in the winter. This seems really weird to a midwesterner, but the ground doesn’t freeze here! So we can grow winter stuff all year long. I’d like to do that and do a good job with it.
  • Figure out the best way to deal with a lilac bush we have. I love it, but it only had two flowers last year and I know it needs to be pruned soon, so it can start growing the stuff that will actually bloom next year.
  • Similar thoughts for a rosebush in our backyard. There are roses EVERYWHERE in this town – they grow on the side of the road, but the (very small) rosebush in our backyard did not bloom. This could be because it’s so young, but I want to find out what I can do to make it beautiful next year.
