New Things to Read and Cook

I’ve been awash good food reads this summer. Here’s what I’ve been reading the past few weeks:

My good friend Mary brought me two books for an early birthday present. She is so on top of things… her birthday is 9 days after mine… they are next month… and she already brought presents. Several weeks ago.

ANYWHO, she brought me The Pioneer Woman (Ree Drummond)’s books: a novelization of how she met her husband and a lovely cookbook that is a lot of simple, delicious, family-style food. If you’re not familiar, you should absolutely head over to, which is one of the best blogs on the planet, frankly.

The novel was a joy to read. It was such a cute story, and possibly the least pretentious published work of all time. Ree has a Tina Fey-like self-deprecating way about her, except that instead of making fun of herself for being a klutz, she makes fun of herself for being too much of a city girl.

I’m a huge fan of the cookbook, too.

Here’s a book that I like a lot more than I thought I would:

First of all, I would like to point out that I gave bowls like the blue and white one to my shower hostesses. They are from Anthropologie. Good to know Gwynnie and I shop at the same place. I’m sure it’s true of all of the places we shop.

Secondly:  This is the first celebrity cookbook I’ve ever even opened, but I think I like what GP is about. I’ve taken a little look at GOOP, but I really like this book. She’s all about making things from scratch for real. As in, make your own soup with your own stock, which in my opinion is the way to go. There’s no red meat in this cookbook, either. Just a lot of really delicious recipes like fried rice with kale and scallions or duck ragout. I have to get this back to the library in a few weeks, but there are definitely a few recipes in this book that will be keepers.

Non-food wise, I’ve just started reading Eva Luna, a gift from my long-distance book club friend Callie. I am an Allende fan to begin with, and I think I’m going to get through this book in no time.
