Made with basic sugar cookie dough, these fun Christmas cookies are just too cute to pass up. Trust me, I’ve eaten like, five today.

I have to say – they are also great because this sugar cookie recipe is totally foolproof. It’s perfect every single time.

Here’s what you need to make the best sugar cookie dough in the world:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup butter (softened slightly – softened is not melted! 🙂 )
  • 1 egg
  • 1/5 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Start by making the sugar cookie dough just like you normally would. Cream the butter and sugar together, and then add the egg, milk and vanilla and continue to mix until uniform. Add your dry ingredients and stir in with a spatula. Okay! time for the fun to start.

Divide the dough in half. Form a disc with the plain dough and wrap it in plastic wrap. Stick it in the fridge to chill while you dye the other half of the dough. This will probably use quite a bit of red food coloring – gel is probably the better option for this, but I went with liquid this time. You’ll probably need to use your hands to get the food coloring properly blended. Then, form a disc with the dough and wrap it in plastic wrap. Since you’ll be handling this dough quite a lot, it’s key to get at least an hour of chilling time.

When the dough has chilled for an hour, take it out of the fridge and cover your work space with wax paper or a nonstick silpat mat. Parchment paper will not work for this one, unfortunately. Roll the dough out into snakes, then twist it together to form ropes of two-colored dough. Then, cut into about 6-inch strips and place on the baking sheet in the shape of a candy cane. Bake at 375 for exactly 8 minutes. If you do more than one tray at once, be sure to switch them halfway through.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookies

We were watching an old episode of Good Eats the other day, and it was about oatmeal. How healthy it is, what you can do with it besides just eat it as oatmeal (bread; cookies), and such. But I had forgotten about how it included one of my favorite tenets of Alton Brownism: RAISINS ARE […]

Chocolate Covered Graham Crackers

Whoever decided that graham crackers were “crackers” was playing fast and loose with the term… there is almost nothing that grahams have in common with saltines and Ritz and the like. They are straight up cookies. Just a little less sweet than the traditional ones, and a different shape. They become even less like crackers […]

The New York Times Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

PSST! Have you entered my sweet Bob’s Red Mill GIVEAWAY yet? Check it out here! I have always loved making cookies, but for some reason lately, mine keep coming out flat. Maybe it’s because I don’t chill them long enough. Maybe it’s the silpat vs. parchment paper thing (don’t worry, I switched back to parchment). […]
