FIRST OF ALL — Welcome to the new pdxfoodlove.com! Kudos to Dave for an amazing redesign! 🙂

This morning, I was thinking about my mom and making these cookies that she and I always make (to be posted this week), and it reminded me of the valuable advice she’s given me over the years while making cookies and otherwise being in the kitchen.

These are just a few:

1) ALWAYS tie your hair back when you’re in the kitchen.

I still do this even though my hair is short. It just involves an elastic headband in addition to the regular ponytail. I can’t stand having my hair in my face while I’m cooking.

2) Crack your eggs into a different bowl before putting them into the main mixing bowl.

I’ve tried to fudge this one before and inevitably there will be a few shards of eggshell in the big bowl that would have been much easier to fish out of a tiny bowl with just egg in it! Mom 1, Rebelliousness 0.

3) Rotate your baking sheets.

Easy to blow off… so worth the teensy bit of effort. Split the time in half and trade racks!

4) Make cookies for when you have guests.

We have only hosted a few people in our new house, but I’ve tried to have cookies or at least a homemade baked good on hand for them to snack on. Going out is fun and all, but there’s nothing like having a little homemade love to share with them as soon as they arrive.

5) The time you put into things really lets people know you care.

My mom might be wrapping a gift that will be unwrapped an hour later, but every single time she takes the time to curl the ribbon and make a matching bow to make it look perfect. She does the same thing with birthday cakes, Christmas cookie plates for teachers, crudite platters, you name it. She is the queen of homemade goods, and she never stops making people feel special.
