Just wanted to share some of the great food reporting that I’ve found across the web this week. Here’s what I’ve been reading:

Mark Bittman tweeted this press release that blows my mind – China is banning antibiotics use in beef production. Usually you hear horror stories about Chinese agriculture (for example, that they use 3x as much fertilizer as we do) but this is huge, and something the US should do too.

The Monterrey Bay Aquarium is a great resource for finding out the sustainability of the seafood you are about to eat or buy. They even have an app and a downloadable PDF that you can keep on your iPad or phone.

Real Simple has a feature on tips for organizing a recipe swap with your friends like we do with Girls and Good Eats.

This BlogHer post has a tutorial on best practices for washing your veggies.

On the expense of cooking food vs. buying food, there’s a lot to read this week. I’ll start with Mark Bittman’s column saying that junk food is not cheaper than buying actual food and cooking it at home.

A columnist over at Mother Jones responded in the first post that I’ve ever really disagreed with on that magazine, saying that the worth of your time used to cook the food makes it more expensive to make food at home. While I agree that your time has value, I don’t agree with basically any of the metrics he used to reach his conclusion. I have a lot to say on this subject, so maybe I’ll save that for another blog post.

In the meantime, my good friend Luke wrote a story about putting this debate into practice. A school district in Tennessee has begun making all of their baked goods from scratch, which has created jobs AND saved the school district money.

Hope all of you are having a great weekend!
