How about one more take on the classic sugar cookie?

Plain, unadulterated cookies are glazed with a delicious orange juice icing. It add a little zing that is different than your normal Christmas cookie.

Here’s what you need to make the orange glaze for a dozen or so cookies – it’s easy to double if you need more:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. orange juice – fresh squeezed if possible!
  • 2 Tbsp. orange zest.

Okay, confession time. I used a tangerine because I forgot to save the other orange peels after I squeezed them all for juice.

Stir the glaze together using a fork. The orange juice will hold a surprising amount of powdered sugar, but if you want to adjust the thickness you can add a little more. Just remember to add only a little bit at a time – work in half teaspoons, maybe. Dip the cookies top-down into the glaze, and then turn right-side up onto a drying rack placed over top of a baking sheet covered with paper towels. WARNING: do not, under any circumstances, use just paper towels. It turns out that the sugar glaze will soak through a couple of paper towels and glue said paper towels to your countertop. Not that I learned from experience or anything.

  1. So what you’re saying is orange juice + powdered sugar = delicious glue? I’m surprisingly ok with that knowledge.
