Something to Try: Balsamic Vinegar on Ice Cream

Sound kind of crazy? Here’s why it works: balsamic vinegar is made from fermented grapes, and is fundamentally sweet. That’s why it works as such a great dressing when you have fruit, a strong cheese, nuts, etc. The world’s simplest dessert is a few pieces of fresh fruit chopped up and drizzled with balsamic. But it’s also amazing as an ice cream topping.

Think of a bowl of vanilla ice cream as a blank canvas:

Then add some fruit – strawberry, banana, kiwi, cherries… so many kinds would work. You probably already have one of those handy.

Then drizzle with some balsamic. Don’t go too crazy, but make sure your hand isn’t too light, either.

It looks like chocolate syrup, almost. And honestly, you don’t even really need the fruit – balsamic with vanilla ice cream is just so delicious on its own! Try it  — you will not be sorry 🙂

  1. YES. Balsamic on ice cream is great.

If you like the tart frozen yogurt, it goes even better with Balsamic, since the sweetness of the vinegar stands out more

I just bought two bottles of super-thick super-syrupy balsamic vinegar for just this purpose.

  2. Oooh, sounds delicious! We haven’t frozen yogurt at home in a while. I’m thinking that needs to happen soon.

  3. Thanks for the tip! While I’d never heard of this, I can’t wait to try it! I have balsamic vinegar on the shelf but I’m not so sure how it will taste with the chocolate ice cream in the freezer…
