Beloved Sacramento restaurant set for re-opening as news delights fans

June 22, 2023 by 8 Comments

Back in February, the much beloved Sacramento restaurant Sam’s Hof Brau burned down in a fire. Until recently, it’s remained closed which is understandable given the circumstances. However, in an announcement on Facebook, its re-opening is just around the corner. Having said this, if you’re expecting a full recovery right away then you’ll be sadly disappointed. Nonetheless, the fact that Sam’s Hof Brau is returning at all wasn’t a certainty at some point, so we can’t be too upset!

As seen in the screenshot below, Sacramento local Kathy Stricklin gave an update. Apparently, she had spoken to the owner’s grandson who gave her some key information. Here, she confirmed that restoration would take around two years due to the interior damage and its value. Secondly, she added that in 4-6 weeks, a food truck would be parked opposite the restaurant to provide residents with some classic Sam’s Hof Brau cuisine.

At first glance, two years may sound like quite some time for a restoration project. However, especially if we’re going to preserve the integrity of the building, then you have to be careful. So, it’s really not that long when you think about it.

Overall, it’s nice to see this story have a happy ending – and the Sacramento community is firmly behind its comeback. It’s fair to say this eatery is iconic within the area and has been standing since 1959.

Carol, while I’m a few years younger than you my family moved to the area in the early 1960s and were already regular Sam’s Hof Brau diners by 1965, when I calculate you were turning 21 and working at Tower Records just a few doors down from Hof Brau. No visit to Hof Brau was complete without some follow up time spent at Tower Records. The young Tower staff were so cool, on the leading edge of the 1967 San Francisco Haight-Ashbury’s “Summer of Love” that drove a new cultural movement, in music, fashion, and politics. And Carol, I’m sure we crossed paths many times at Tower during the years you worked there, so you were yourself a part of Sacramento’s iconic history on that piece of North Sacramento real estate. You were a hipster then, and as I do, never lost your warm memories of those early years of Hof Brau’s and Tower’s conjoined history.

I thought their food was bland except for the stuffing.

Hopefully the new Sam’s will capture more of the traditional 1960’s early era atmosphere and food quality. In recent years I have been disappointed with the food and customer service. When my dad first brought us to Sam’s, a wonderful rare roast beef sandwich cost only $64 cents. Of course there was the also a Sam’s on J Street (The original Sam’s), one on L street across from the Capitol, one in Camaron Park(Sam’s Town), and I believe a Sam’s just east of Auburn.

Of course I don’t expect a sandwich to cost only 64 cents, but $12 to 14 bucks. Give me a break.

    Cheers,

    John at 80 years old.
