Boston residents divided after planned protest over bike lanes
Like many parts of the USA, Boston’s city streets are currently going through a period of change. Specifically, Centre Street is going to be adding cycling lanes in the near future to accommodate for pedestrianization. While many locals are happy about this – some are not, and this has made for a divided community.
As a result, a planned protest is set to take place on July 12th from 5 PM. This was spotted on a recent flyer that read: “Save Centre Street. Stop the road diet standout.” Apparently, this poster was created by West Roxbury residents which was also featured in the artwork.
One Bostonian who was against the protest had this to say on social media: “Great to hear! I live in West Roxbury and I’m a driver, bike commuter, parent, and regular patron of local businesses. I and many other residents support the redesign. We would like to cross Centre on foot without being mowed down.”
However, some supported the West Roxbury protest group and said: “Bike lanes and wide curbs are great things. Bike lanes and wide curbs that cause gridlocked traffic, thus provoking greater air pollution, noise levels, harming local businesses and the general health and safety of local residents, is the exact opposite of social progress.”
With this being said, the current proposals not only plan to divide the literal streets but also seem to be dividing the people of Boston too. It seems that there are two very different groups regarding these changes and these fractions look set to rage on with little compromise in sight.
