Do YOU know what this weird building is in Houston?
Located off Gulf Freeway is arguably one of Houston’s weirdest buildings. This is a large, metal rectangular shape that sticks out like a sore thumb due to being bright blue. Not only this – but it’s also been around since at least the 90s and doesn’t really seem like it’s used for anything in particular.
It turns out that this place used to be a makeshift billboard that advertised the local self storage business that was located on the property. This actually makes a lot of sense considering that it was right by a freeway – so in that sense, it would have made for some great advertising at the time.
Looking closely at the bottom floor, you can see how it may have once been used for self storage. Since then, the self storage business has long since folded, and at one point this was replaced by a soil technology company that decided to use it to advertise their own business. For a period, this also said “Jesus loves you” which many people will often remember it by.
These days, the area is owned by a crane company that kept the blue structure but has left it dormant. In fairness, it would probably cost a lot of money and hassle to knock it down. Over the years, the accompanying tree has also grown taller and taller which shows just how long the blue building has stood there for. So, now you’ve had a history lesson of one of Houston’s weirdest buildings and its transformation over the years.
