Downtown Washington H&M Store to close
One of Washington’s biggest retail stores is set to close down on August 5th. Yesterday, a photo of a sign emerged on the front of the F Street H&M store which read, “Thanks F Street for many great years – Store closing on August 5th, but you can still visit us at 3222 M Street or 1133 Connecticut Avenue.”
Arguably, this was one of the biggest retail stores and spaces in the downtown area, and its closure doesn’t look good for the general downtown ecosystem. Due to the size of the H&M store, this may even have a negative knock-on effect for other stores in the local proximity.
However, it may not be as daunting as it sounds. A Twitter account named “Barred in DC” claimed that a tipster had said that the space had already found new owners to rent the space. This comes after H&M didn’t renew their lease after nearly two decades on the site. According to some, this was after the landlord increased the rent – however, this theory has yet to be confirmed.
Locals weren’t particularly enthused by its closure either – with one saying, “They must’ve got tired of getting ransacked and clothes stolen.” While another claimed: “DC is going to be a ghost town if they can’t get the crime together.” Either way, it looks like this store will be missed, and of course – it’s not a nice situation if you’re an employee there as well.
Having said this, there’s still over one month of shopping to be done – and if you visit in the final days then you may be able to grab yourself a closing down bargain.
