Electric bike stolen at gunpoint in Portland
This weekend, an electric bike was stolen at gunpoint in the South Waterfront Park area of Portland. According to the victim, the thief was a white male driving a BMW, with the crime happening on Friday Morning.
Over the years, e-bikes have been targets of thieves, seeing as they cost an average of $2,000 which means they’re often in high demand. Interestingly though, just days before this crime was committed, it was revealed by the PBOT that bike theft had declined significantly in the past 5 years.
According to the article, this was because of the introduction to the public bike scheme which meant less people owned their own private bikes. Elsewhere, Portland residents claimed this was because they owned less bikes simply due to the high chance of them getting stolen!
So, as you can see the bike theft problem has not been completely eradicated in Portland. Nonetheless, the numbers are somewhat promising. Regardless of this, it still remains a fact that the victim of the South Waterfront Park crime will still be shaken after having a gun waved at them. With this in mind, if you have any information on this crime, please do not hesitate to contact the police.
