Footage shows abandoned and ‘Dangerous’ Corpus Christi Sunrise Mall

Back in 2019, the Sunrise Mall finally closed its doors for good. Like many malls across the USA, it no longer became economically viable and these days it falls into the ‘dead mall’ category. In a recent Youtube video, an urban explorer named ‘Ace’ visited Corpus Christi and explored the Sunrise Mall to see what remained.

A little trivia surrounding this mall is that it featured in the 1985 movie ‘Legend of Billie Jean’, which isn’t too surprising seeing as the flick was set in Texas. The recent video is over a 38 minutes long and offers a lot of insight into the mall’s current state. So if you’re based in Corpus Christi and want to get hit with a range of emotions from sadness to nostalgia, then check out the footage below.

In the footage, the explorer claims that it’s best for the Sunrise Mall to get completely demolished. Honestly speaking, this is probably the best option. The reason for this is that it’s filled with potential death traps and safety hazards which haven’t been looked at in years. As you can see by the thumbnail, it’s also been trashed by vandals over time.

Perhaps the strangest quirk of the video is that it shows there is still one remaining building left in the entire mall. This is a Planet Fitness that is located right by the exit. As Ace describes it, it’s a bizarre feature seeing as you can work out while looking outside of the gym and looking over an almost apocalyptic scene.

On a final note, it’s quite eerie to see that this mall has only been closed for four years, but it feels like an eternity. Culturally, a lot has happened within those four years and this shows that time waits for no one.

Sad to see. We owned two stores there. Poor mall management, and poor decision selling one back to the previous owner, who graciously took our money, yet never paid us a dime in return, cost us a fortune and chapter 7 bankruptcy…Never trust a friend like that…Sad indeed…. Good riddance…
