Genius or dangerous? Local shows smart way to fend off RV dwellers

May 24, 2023 by 13 Comments

A local Portland resident recently sparked debate by showing their guerilla tactics when it came to dealing with RV dwellers close to their house. As seen in the image below, they left a big sign on the front of the van which reads “Sells meth”. As we know, this drug is prominent in Portland with the homeless population, you can imagine that it could cause the RV dweller some problems. At the same time, if you really did live that locally to the RV, then it may not even be that smart concerning your own safety.

It turns out that the same person also had some pretty extreme actions they undertook against RV’s – and wrote, “This guy took some more “encouragement”. After having a gallon of paint thrown on their windshield, and a few cubic feet of compost and spent cat litter dumped into their hood (which was left open and half the parts were missing from the engine), an old Blazer showed up with a tow strap and towed it away.”

Whilst this message was mostly met with positivity and other Portlanders agreed that it was selfish to leave a tatty RV outside someones house, not all agreed. Here, someone responded by adding, “Yeah, this rhetoric is scary. OP just posted a picture of a van and a plan to get the occupants threatened and everyone is cheering. We will see more innocent people die because of this.”

Clearly, this is quite an effective, yet undeniably divisive tactic. Let us know what you think regarding its morality in the comments.

This guy sound like a total idiot, maybe grow a pair and talk to the person. Instead of destroying there property like a coward. Now if something happens to this guys house, he’s gonna be all mad even though he just did the same thing. It doesn’t make it ok to do something like to someone because your fortunate enought to have a house, and not be addicted to drugs,or have gone thru whatever horrible stuff this homeless person probably gone through. I agree that the r.v and all the urban camping is way outa control and something has to be done about it. But going out there and doing the same things your complaining there doing just makes you a hypocrite, that’s just stoking the fire. Oh yea get a life as well. Put all that energy into something positive, not just making the problem worse

Paint? Probably not. Kitty litter(used, one would assume) creative! The sign, a burst of genius. A still better option would be for Portland enforcing current laws , citing unlicensed vehicles and clearing the streets for a regular cleaning, you know, all those things a city government is SUPPOSED to do!

You never know what your future will bring. Be careful you might find yourself on their side of the fence one day.

Unfortunately, when the government fails to maintain a lawful and orderly society vigilantism will arise. Often it’s the weakest and the innocent that suffer from it. If our officials can’t get control of the streets, it’s going to get worse.

    Or.
.. destroying the RV could cause the eyesore to be abandoned where it sits. Then you have the problem of getting it removed. Preventing sidewalk squatters w/engines is better. Obstruct the area.

That is criminal completely vandalism and also could truly be considered a hate crime and more by the letter of the law. I know it sucks but you cannot break the law and treat people like that and think that your in the right by doing wrong. And does he really know that those people in the RV were drug addicts or was it just an assumption because of COVID a lot of people lost their jobs which led to losing their homes not all the people in rv’s or homeless are drug addicts or worse some are families and given more than not are bad but until you take the time to find out you have no excuse whatsoever to treat another human being in that matter and I hope they press this matter and press charges or take the criminal homeowner to court.

It was wrong to vandaluse the rv,no matter what condition, operable or inoperable. It also jeopardizes that persons safety, his home, and pets.Nothing was mentioned about contacting local police, the city, and county about enforcing parking and traffic ordinances,or any HOA ordinances of the neighborhood. The owner of the RV has to sleep sometine, maybe a non violent approach would have been banding together with all neighbors, and all of them walking across the street on the opposite sidewalk, carrying loud boom boxes on their shoulders, playing an obnoxiously insane music track.(We got to rock onto electric Avenue)-or whatever that song is called?

Thats a funny and effective tactic however the way I would have approached it would be to talk to the RV owner had that not worked than I would call local police.

These folks commenting sure are a sanctimonious bunch! When dozens of calls to the police and countless emails to local officials are answered only with officials saying, “We can’t criminalize homelessness. There’s nothing we can do about it.” What do you expect to happen? Being compassionate toward the less fortunate and reaching a breaking point while dealing with their garbage are NOT mutually exclusive concepts!

Amen, the homeless don’t have more rights than anyone else. I have no right to dump trash and human waste anywhere I choose and would expect some kind of penalty if I tried it

Remember fellow humans, Karma has a very long memory and she will pay a visit upon you.

My advice, follow the Golden Rule.

What you do today, will be returned to you one day in the future.

This is a government problem. Is the TV illegal or illegally parked? I suspect it is and the city or county is responsible for upholding the law. But they don’t and we have no one to blame but ourselves for electing the incompetent “leaders” into office and incredibly reelecting them expecting different results. SMH

Exactly! Ted Wheeler talks a lot of bs but does very little to solve the problems. What are they doing with our tax dollars that were meant for homeless issues??? NOTHING is changing! Our leaders are anything but leaders!
