GIGANTIC Sinkhole seen on Denver Expressway
Don’t adjust your screen – it isn’t Photoshop. Instead, that huge black object in the ground is possibly the biggest pothole that Denver has ever seen. In fact, it could even be classified as a sinkhole due to the sheer size of the thing.
Thankfully, the road was quickly blocked off from the public and a construction team was on it quickly. Seriously, if a car was going at speed and this gave way then it could have easily caused a crash, or worse. Over the years, Denver has gained a reputation for mass potholes which seem to pop up everywhere. Nonetheless, this was something else and shows how dangerous the roads can sometimes be.
According to one of the construction workers on the scene, this roughly 12 feet deep and 15 feet wide. In other words, you’d be right in calling this a sinkhole. Despite this being a fairly rare occurrence, not everyone saw it as a novelty – with one resident claiming, “It doesn’t matter how much money we threw at fixing roads. Record rain. Colorado clay. Sinkholes were going to happen. Your tabor check would not have stopped this.”
As cynical as this may sound, there’s a big element of truth in this. One way to counter such problems would be to switch to stronger materials when building roads. However, this is costly and isn’t realistic due to the nature of short-term politics. Sadly, this may not be the first mega pothole in the city, and it won’t be the last either.
