Homemade Chocolate Syrup
Woohoo! It’s another busy week. I don’t even know where the time goes. I say that and it’s only Tuesday. I just pulled a beautiful quiche out of the oven for soup club and I’m waiting on our homemade sourdough to finish baking next.
On that note, this week on the blog is full of pretty simple recipes, but you know what? I’m ok with that. Simple recipes make the world go ’round. Especially chocolate syrup. And chocolate syrup can be used for so many different important things. Like breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also beverages. And snacks.
This is one of those recipes where you might want to take a look at the back of the bottle you buy in the store, if you’re on the fence about making it at home. Why bother with all of those extra preservatives, flavors, and artificial flavorings when you could make something so easy at home? That’s right — there is actually artificial flavoring in store-bought chocolate syrup. This seems odd to me. Chocolate and sugar already taste pretty darned good
Here’s what you need:
1 1/2 cups water
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
2 tsp. vanilla
Pinch of kosher salt
In a saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the water and sugar. Continue heating until the sugar dissolves.
Add the cocoa, salt and vanilla in next, whisking until the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat. You can serve it immediately on heated items like pancakes. Allow to cool completely before using in cold applications or transferring to a glass storage vessel and storing in the refrigerator.
