Is the dormant OKC Rainbow Records store FINALLY getting new owners?
If you’ve ever driven past NW Corner of 23rd & Classen then you’ll see a familiar sight. That is, the abandoned store of Rainbow Records – which is complete with an army of old vacuum cleaners sitting inside. On top of this store is a billboard that actively displays adverts. However, the Rainbow Records store has been dormant for years.
However, one sharp-sighted Oklahoman recently photographed something borderline incredible – this was work being done on the Rainbow Records shop which included diggers and tradesmen going inside. So, does this mean that it’s finally the beginning of the end for Rainbow Records, which has stood for many years, like a relic lost in time.
In fact, Rainbow Records has been closed since 2003 – so it’s literally been 20 years since this store was used by the public. Oklahoma City locals took to social media to speculate what could fill the new space, with many believing it could be an expansion for the nearby Craig’s Emporium. Logically, this theory makes the most sense.
Many were just shocked to see work being done on this site – which has also been referred to as a ‘vacuum graveyard’. One Oklahoman even said, “Years ago I owned a saltwater aquarium business and had contacted the owner about leasing the place, rent was astronomical considering all the work that needed to be done that was about 2005 and he was asking almost $13,000/month for it.”
So, now we know why this place probably wasn’t getting much attention in the way of prospective new owners. Nonetheless, if anything, it shows that change can happen – even if it’s done at a snails pace. As for what happens to the store, watch this space…
