Is this the most STRESSFUL road in Knoxville?
Historically, some roads are busier than others. However, in Knoxville, there are few journeys that compare to Farragut in terms of traffic and stress. Arguably, this is the most stressful journey in the entire city – and as the map below proves, you shouldn’t go there unless you want to sit in traffic. Unfortunately for some, this is a journey that is done out of necessity such as commuting as there aren’t many alternative routes either.
It isn’t just the map either – this week, Knoxville locals have been having their say on social media about Farragut and the consensus is in…it’s not very well liked!
This screenshot shows the Google route of Farragut. The red indicates heavy, slow traffic. Even the orange means that traffic is bad in these areas.
One Knoxville resident claimed it was due to the nasty combination of an intersection combining with speed limit changes. In a social media comment, they said, “An intersection that involves lots of merging depending on what part of the intersection you’re on. Two of the most popular interstates in the entire nation merging/diverging with speed limit changes. It’s an absolute disaster every single day.”
It’s not just because of that either, as another local added, “Also, the deceptive rise in elevation. Seen a lot of east bound vehicles overheat between the merge and the weigh station.”
For the time being, it looks as though Farragut is well worthy of its reputation and it doesn’t look like there will ba any improvements anytime soon. With this in mind, it looks like it truly is the king of awful traffic around these parts.
Traffic in Farragut is deliberate. The Vice Mayor Louise Povlin has said many times the town wants to discourage pass through traffic so these people passing through will pick alternative routes. At the same time Farragut spends many tens of thousands of dollars promoting tourism. It makes no sense. Tourism is to bring people to Farragut, not run them off.
Listen to Vice Mayor Povlin here explain her vision of traffic: https://youtu.be/V-Q4V7prCaw
She wants people to sit through extra traffic lights. Why?
In the last Mayor and Alderman meeting June 22nd Povlin rejects the needed new additional left-hand turn lanes at Kingston Pike and Cambell Station Road: https://youtu.be/NK9cQHhKIEk
Those new left-hand turn lanes are required by the traffic study for the Biddle Farm apartments.
The Vice Mayor wants a new large roundabout on Watt Road next to Mayor Leonard Park to keep people from coming to Farragut. Does it make any sense?
