Yesterday, CCTV footage caught a bunch of mail thieves caught in the act as they shamelessly ransacked a communal mail box in the Alamitos Beach area of Long Beach. To make matters worse, this also took place in a building that was mostly filled with seniors.

Unfortunately for the thieves however, they weren’t the brightest as this took place right in front of the CCTV – which gave us a clear facial view of one of the alleged culprits. In an interesting twist, they also broke into the mail boxes with relative ease – making it look like they used an arrow key. Using one of these without being a professional mail man in itself is a federal crime.

Perhaps it was due to the CCTV – but one local claimed to have also been hit by the same thieves earlier on in the year and added, “Those are the same people that hit my apartment multiple times in Bixby. I caught them going through our mail video taped them doing it and filed a police report. Apparently it’s not that big of a deal to the police.”

Although this type of crime is fairly rare in Long Beach, it certainly does go on. Typically, the elderly are targeted as they receive valuables in the post such as SSI checks and prescription medicines in the post. And, although all types of crime is bad, there’s something extra sickening to see it happen against seniors.
