Man shows what $400 gets for groceries in Anchorage – You may be shocked
In a recent Youtube video, a man went around his local Red Apple Market and Costco stores to buy groceries for his family. Along the way, she showed what he bought in an average week and how much it cost. As the title suggests, this was $400 in total. For those wondering, Red Apple is an Asian store that is actually one of the cheaper Asian supermarkets in the area. As we know, Costco is also cheaper than the average store due to its bulk options.
Here, he purchased a mixture of fresh and canned foods which you’d expect. What was most interesting is how quickly his basket rose in price. Despite being high quality goods, it was still more expensive than you may anticipate and shows the current economic climate in Alaska. Having said this, you could also argue that the entirety of the USA is feeling the pinch of rising food prices right now.
It should also be noted that the cost of living in Anchorage has always been pretty high which is typically matched by fairly high wages. Perhaps the biggest takeaway of this video though, was how much it costs to eat healthy, high-quality foods.
In brief, it looks as though you’ve got two options – either buy cheap canned stuff, or nicer fresh stuff. The issue is that in doing the latter, it will cost a lot more. Sadly, this is the harsh reality of food shopping right now – and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change anytime soon.
The $ 400 dollar challenge needs to be done out in bush Alaska. A good portion of the residents out there buy in Anchorage or find some store that might do bush orders.
