NYC Residents on alert after chilling Mail Scam
A scam has recently been reported in New York City that is targeting the mailboxes of residents. This was discussed online and apparently involves a fake law firm offering unclaimed insurance of over $10,000,000. For most regular New Yorkers, you may start seeing red flags when a sum of that amount is mentioned, but remember – scams often prey on the most gullible.
According to the scam, the company in question does not exist and claims to be located in Toronto, Ontario. However, the letter was sent with an NYC stamp, meaning it was not sent from Canada. Furthermore, after a little investigating, it turns out that the company’s site is literally two weeks old.
Another huge giveaway is that the letter doesn’t even have a physical return address, but it does have an email address. This is to shift the conversation online, whereby potential victims can easily be duped into transferring thousands of dollars in seconds.
Although this scam may not be the most convincing, it does have one smart element. This is because it takes place offline (at least to begin with). This means that they may be targeting the elderly or the uninformed, who are more likely to get tricked.
As is always the case with these sorts of things, it pays to be vigilant and keep calm when reading about big sums of money. If you are concerned about others – then it also wouldn’t hurt to inform them about what is going on.
