“Only in Portland” – Response to $12 Ice Cubes
In a recent social media post that went viral, one eagle-eyed Portland resident spotted $12 ice cubes for sale in their local supermarket. These were dubbed ‘PDX Ice’ and were on sale for $12 for a pack of what appeared to be 8 ice cubes. As a result, the resident wrote “Only in Portland”
This comment is a nod to the (sometimes) ludicrous nature of Portland OR, which has earned a hipster tag over the years, for pretentious culture which is reflected in the price of $12 for a bunch of ice cubes. Of course, this hipster tag is often misguided and over-exaggerated, but sadly these ice cubes aren’t a parody and are the real deal.
Another Portland resident jokingly wrote “It’s artisanal ice made of the finest tap water” whereas another chimed in with a more serious response, adding “PDX Ice is actually an awesome local company, the owners are really cool and their products and service are extremely high quality and consistent. I’ve had accounts with them at multiple bars I’ve run and will always recommend them.”
So, whilst this isn’t a joke, it seems to have genuinely divided opinion within the PDX community – with some laughing at the absurdity of the prices, whereas others went on to defend the PDX Ice company.
