Opinion: Portland Liberals are just as out of touch with reality as MAGA folks
I identify as a liberal with left-leaning views. In the context of Portland, including this forum, I have observed that the “activists” demonstrate strikingly similar behaviors to the MAGA crowd. These behaviors encompass disregarding evidence, advocating for unattainable ideals and solutions, and opposing anything that does not align with their own beliefs.
Additionally, they employ the same logical fallacies, such as personal attacks and slippery slope arguments. Interestingly, they seem to treat their position as a kind of “religious” conviction, which justifies their acceptance of these negative behaviors. Let us celebrate the moderate majority, as they offer a balanced and sensible approach.
Addressing drug addiction and assisting those in need is undoubtedly important. However, when all drugs are decriminalized, it has unintended consequences. People from different regions relocate to Portland with the sole purpose of residing on the streets and perpetuating drug abuse, taking advantage of the decriminalization laws that restrict police intervention.
Initially, I felt sympathetic towards the homeless population in and around downtown, believing that they were struggling and sincerely striving to rebuild their lives. Regrettably, my empathy has diminished as the homeless situation has grown increasingly alarming, dangerous, and aggressive. The issue has been further compounded by the prevalent drug problem.
In the past, I greatly appreciated Portland’s exceptional MAX system. However, nowadays, individuals who possess cars actively avoid it due to its unfortunate transformation into a popular refuge for the homeless and drug addicts. While the MAX remains an excellent option for downtown visits, a significant majority now opts to steer clear of downtown due to the unsettling and unsafe atmosphere, instead favoring cleaner and safer suburban areas like Beaverton, Hillsboro, and Tigard.
