Oversize Traffic Disruption In Portland – But Was It The Drivers Fault?
In a bizarre sighting. A truck driver managed to get a forklift wedged under a bridge in the middle of Portland. Directly in the middle lane of traffic, this mistake caused 2 police cruisers to be called to the scene, as well as specialist cutting equipment as the workers tried to quickly rectify the driving error.
As you can see from the image and short video, the cargo couldn’t be labelled any more obviously. In giant black and yellow font, “OVERSIZED LOAD” is very clearly displayed.
So how then, did the driver of thie vehicle, manage to get his own delivery wedged under a concrete bridge?
While some Portland locals claimed that the cops should have simply let the air out of the trucks tires and then slowly rolled the vehicle forwards 5 meters, this is not the option that was chosen. In the end, the forklift had to be cut in order to free the wreckage from the bridge.
Although many people thought that the worker should have been fired, experienced heavy cargo operators came to the defense of the driver.
You would expect that this kind of incident would come with a hefty fine, but in this case it seems like it won’t. All contractors are required to measure the height of their cargo, so incidents like this won’t happen. However, even though this bridge has a relatively low clearance, crucially there is no sign displayed – which means the driver had no way of knowing what height the bridge actually was.
In this case, all 3 lanes of the road have slightly different heigh clearances due to the angle of the bridge, as you can see, not a single one had this height posted.
Furthermore, specialized GPS does not always display the exact height of every bridge in the country, meaning it occasionally the driver must guess and pray in order to get underneath.
