Popular Boston Bar introduces Tip Jar in toilets – And locals are NOT happy
Over the past year or so, the USA has experienced a kind of strange new revolution surrounding tipping culture. While there’s nothing wrong with paying appreciation when you’re a customer – sometimes this can go a bit too far, and borders on the verge of begging.
This is what many Bostonians thought at the sight of the image below. This was taken at The Tall Ship Boston recently, which is a lounge bar located on a ship. Overall, it’s a nice venue but this addition definitely seems a little trashy.
Featuring on social media, this image certainly rubbed people the wrong way, with one saying: “The Tall Ship is just a money grab so this makes sense” – However, it seems as though this phenomenon isn’t exclusive to this particular establishment. Others claimed that in recent months, they had noticed similar tip jars in local liquor and convenience stores. In other words, it really does look as though tip culture in the US is getting out of hand.
Speaking of which, another Bostonian had this to say: “I’m in Europe right now and goddamn it’s glorious not having to worry about accounting for tips or taxes. What you see is what you pay. I’ve made up my mind to stop tipping for everything back home going forward besides food service.”
With this said the beauty of tipping is that ultimately, if you don’t want to – then you don’t have to pay. Nonetheless, it can certainly lead to a few awkward moments if the tipping is pressured on customers to pay.
