Portland Has Its Own Craft Beer Bar In Tokyo Japan!
In one of the more strange combinations we’ve seen, Japan has its very own tribute to the city of Portland in form of a craft beer bar.
This bar is located in Shibuya, Japan, but after going inside, you certainly feel like you are firmly on the west coast of America. Other than the writing on signs, there is pretty much nothing Japanese about this place at all – as it is a tribute to the city of Portland.
The bar – aptly named PDX Tap Room serves 10 different craft ales from the city of Portland, has American music playing and is filled to the brim with Portland based memorabilia.
As a country, Japan does have a high number of unusually themed bars, but even still – it is very strange to find an establishment based on the city of Portland and also its attention to detail. Locals and tourists are fond of the bar as it has been a successful business venture for over 7 years.
The prices are certainly on the high side (in the ballpark of $15 USD), but this is because all of the shown beers have been imported directly from America. Of course, the cost of running and operating a bar in Tokyo is not cheap either.
On a wall in the bathroom is a framed poster of the TriMet. It is quite odd, but charming to see just how much the owner of this place loves and respects Portland.
Americans may not know this, but some Japanese people are very fond of Portland and Oregon in general. In the 1980’s a TV show named “From Oregon with Love” (or locally “Oregon Kara Ai”) was released. The popular TV show was about a Japanese boy who had to emigrate to Japan and live with his aunt. Here he would learn the cultural differences between the two countries.
If you ever go to Japan and want to visit your home city whilst you’re there, the address is: Tokyo, Shibuya City, Jingumae, 5 Chome−30−2 2F and the bar is open from 3pm – till late every day of the week.
