SELFISH Driver Blocks Streetcar On Bond Ave – Stops Commuters Getting To Work
Unfortunately it’s an all too common sight in Portland. Whilst most drivers park respectfully, when they don’t, it can stop 30 people getting to work on time that morning.
The driver of this car has plenty of space to park in the bay, but has chosen to overhang in to the street. Their car is parked at an angle, whilst their front right tyre is already on the line. Furthermore, even if the driver was particularly bad at parking, there is more than enough space in between the car behind and the sidewalk at the front to take time and park properly.
As the driver was so inconsiderate, this caused people to have to get out of the streetcar and make their own way to work by either walking or cycling.
Some Portland residents have suggested alternative solutions to problems like this such as having a bumper on the side of the streetcar which nudges cars back in to place. This would be ideal for cars which were slightly overhanging in to the street.
A second option (which is popular in continental Europe) is to move the vehicle by force. All strong passengers within the streetcar, will get out and move the vehicle back in to place and then get on with their day.
Obviously this car would be towed eventually, but this generally takes around 15 minutes to arrive. If the driver comes back within 10 minutes, they have still wasted time from everyones day and get on with their own with no punishment.
Currently there are only two consequences for blocking a streetcar in Portland, which are:
Ticketing and fines: Parking enforcement officers may issue you a parking citation, which could result in fines. The specific amount can vary based on the violation and location.
Towing: If your vehicle is blocking the streetcar tracks and causing significant disruption, it may be towed. You would be responsible for the towing fees and any additional fines.
