Step Into The Portland Of The Past At Retro Game Bar
If you wanted to drown out your current problems, whilst enjoying childhood memories of the past – then you came to the right place. Located on NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Retro Game Bar is unique and offers pretty good value for money.
At first glance, it’s quite a weird combination. Retro video games and a bar are not really something you would have seen 20 years ago. But in all honesty, it has a much nice atmosphere than a sports bar and it’s not like you’ll see 2 angry men getting into a fist fight over Tekken either (although we can’t guarantee it).
For just $6, you can play as much as you like until you leave, which is pretty good value in todays inflationary environment. Granted, you will likely purchase some drinks whilst you are in the bar, but it would be fairly difficult to get drunk whilst playing chocobo racing.
Open from 5pm-Midnight daily, the bar has a good selection of cocktails, mocktails and other soft drinks. Although perhaps most impressive is the selection of food. If you were to look at the images of the bar alone, you would expect they may offer some hamburgers at most, but you’d be quite wrong.
Salads, noodles, Thai curries and much more exotic flavours are available which is really quite surprising for a place that is set up for people to drink and enjoy video games. Some of these options are both vegan and gluten free too!
Perhaps most surprising is the huge variety of games the bar has on offer. Whilst not absolutely everything is here, there is still more than you would expect. They have a huge selection of Ps2 games, a dreamcast, N64, Snes, NES and many other machines.
Of course, some killjoy will likely say that all these games can be emulated for free inside the comfort of your own home – which is true.
However, for $6, this really is quite a cheap form of social entertainment with friends. If you are nerdy type of person who doesn’t want to go to a regular bar or would prefer to take part in an indoor activity, this is a much better option than starting at a computer screen on your own.
