Street in Davis renamed to Darcelle XV St after legendary Drag Queen
Yesterday, Portland resident Saul T Scrapper removed the sign in NW Third Ave Oldtown (97209) and replaced it with a custom sign, reading “NW Darcelle XV St” in honor of the legendary drag queen. So, if you’d like to look at the sign and pay your respects, then you can do so.
This comes just days after Darcelle XV’s passing was announced and understandably, fans have paid their respects. In fact, this sign isn’t too surprising, seeing as many called for a street to be named after the Portland icon.
However, it’s not permanent. As said, this was a custom sign and will not stay up forever. Having said this, PDX council have said that it can stay up for the time being whilst locals grieve. Looking closer at the sign, it also reads “Happiness reigns forever” which is a fitting tribute to Portland’s finest queen.
Still, there may be some movement when it comes to a permanent sign. This comes after the Portland mayor Mayor Ted Wheeler said “Darcelle is a Portland icon and if a proposal to change the street name was brought forward to City Council, Mayor Wheeler would help see it through,” says his spokesperson Cody Bowman. “In the near-term, Mayor Wheeler supports the temporary signage and hopes it will stay up.”
So, even though there is notorious amounts of paperwork and red-tape when it comes to changing street names, hopefully it looks like this one could last forever.
