The LAST Walmart in Portland finally closes its doors

May 21, 2023 by 21 Comments

Back in March, Walmart announced that all of its shops in Portland would be closing. This was met by many Portland locals claiming that shoplifting was the cause of Walmart’s pull-out, as many local shops had also suffered from the recent blight of shoplifting and vandalism in the city.

Just a few months later, it seems as though the last ever Walmart in Portland has finally closed its doors. This was documented by various users on Twitter – who filmed the empty isles and honestly, it was quite a surreal, eerie sight.

Sadly, it’s not known what will replace these Walmart shops – and it may be a case that similarly sized retail giants are hesitant to try and fill Walmart’s shoes. It also isn’t great for families of Portland in terms of price and inconvenience. As ever in this case, it may be the lowest-income families who get hit the worst by Walmart’s absence, despite some locals being critical of its presence.

On Twitter, one user wrote “What’s the point? They would be back the next day stealing more. They don’t prosecute crime. Go woke, lose everything.” – whilst this may be hyperbole and a little exaggerated, you can see why people are mad with the last ever Walmart closing down in Portland.

BLAME THE PREVIOUS GOVERNOR Did NOTHING.the Previous Gov ADVOCATED THE DEMOCRAT AG TO NOT PROSECUTE & the Mayor of Portland plus the DA FOR PORTLAND = no jail time= Mayor catch & release or a night in jail• hold and release. I understand records were expunged (?) on all or part of these Miscreants. We have this STEALING: off porches/in front of apt/condo doors, mass people enter and BOLDLY STEAL.. removing as much high end merchandise ; no one does anything to stop these THIEVES..If there is NOT A DETERRENT TO CRIME, it will continue. Walmart -Each store lost MILLIONS. Why would any business stay in business to supply these THIEVES, when the Police’s hands are tied with these woke local administrators ALLOW THIS GARBAGE to Continue?

      1. Vivi says:

Your dead brain? Look at how bad Portland is now, no liberal here, look at the fact you are living in an unsafety everywhere, whoever Mayor or Governor we don’t care just bring back Portland no homelesses, no tents on the streets

JD – Back to grade school for you!! First, take writing and composition lessons; second, punctuation is your friend; third, all caps is just juvenile tantrums. Also, it looks like the other commentators could join you in elementary school.

      1. Luke says:

Pretty sad that your answer to JDs sensible post is to criticize punctuation. You must be as dead to common sense as many others in Portland.

        1. Joshua says:

Portland you all voted far left and you got what you voted for. You made your own grave and I don’t care Portland and far left liberals have destroyed everything they touch and you voted for it.

Portland used to be an awesome place, but allowing it to deteriorate at record levels, has completely turned a nice place into a cesspool, the city needs to get tough or it’s going to be totally gone

    1. Andre says:

Move. It’s simple. If it’s a cesspool as you say, get to steppin’ and shut up.

It’s not Woke it’s the worthless mayor and a morabund city council that’s the problem . Those clowns have ruined Portland ! I won’t invest a dime in that city ever again! However I’m glad to see Walmart close it’s a disgusting company.

Alot too late and now that crap is coming across the bridge to Washington state. Time to get TOUGH on these crimes and protect our communities

We have had a LOT of people from California move here. Look what has happened to CA! The last time we had Republican leadership…Gov. McCall, was when I moved here in 1985. It was a beautiful, safe, city. The city is now dirty, with graffiti, boarded up windows, tents on the streets and homeless wandering the streets. I do not go there…I would not feel safe. I feel sorry for the businesses that are trying to survive.

What’s the end game of ruining cities and the country. WHAT DO THESE DEMOCRATS WANT??

  6. SAMUEL I SOUTHARDS says:

Portland proper only had 2 Walmart stores, the one at Hayden Meadows also called the North Portland store in this article, but we new in March that is was closing along with the one at 82nd ave. and Holgate, there are other Walmart stores in the greater metro area they just don’t fall inside Portland city limits, there are stores in Happy Valley, on 82nd near Clackamas Town Center, one in the Troutdale/Wood Village area and Beaverton.

  7. Barri says:

Maybe they should convert the buildings into new jail facilities.

    1. East pdx 4 eva says:

Yep they wouldn’t have to drive the criminals too far!

  8. Dale says:

Portland has gone down the toilet. I’m a Native Oregonian (66yrd) and I refuse to go downtown if I’m even up that way. Sad

Open your eyes people, you judge the value on Walmart? The most white trashy store ever as the billionaire owners count their change. Look around folks every large city in the USA is suffering yet it’s always political. If so thanks to a hateful divisive orange boy that caused negative view and passed it around. Portland will recover and if you do hate it Idaho is waiting. Then maybe us locals WILL get our city back. Will take some time and maybe change in government but it will happen. Positive reaction to the negative do nothingers is the key Brick and mortar may have loss the usefulness as delivering is the winner …. Times they are a changing …again.

    1. John Klem says:

You have got to be the worst commenter ever. You can’t blame it on orange man, his view was not negative, but optimistic everything could be better until a massive hoax replaced him with modern woke politics. See you are lying to yourself because you don’t want to admit you were deceived. The rule in life is that no work equals no eat. Some of us accept that as logical and factual. When you run out of other people’s money, you are going to be hungry. What will happen when there is no more income to tax? Right now at least two big employers are no longer paying tax and many former employees are no longer paying tax. It is only a matter of time before a lot of people are going to find there is no food to buy with food stamps.

There is also a Walmart in Gresham on Powell. It is not a super store. It is mainly grocery plus pharmacy.
