The Martinez
Happy Sunday night, everyone. It’s been a busy and fun weekend yet again, and it’s about to be another busy work week doing big things. I’ll be hitting the road early tomorrow for one of the biggest weeks of the year at work.
But not before I have a cocktail.
The Martinez is the evolutionary step between the Manhattan and the Martini. It’s one of the oldest cocktails, too, listed in the famous Jerry Thomas book “How to Mix Drinks” from 1887. It is a gin cocktail, but you could also call it a vermouth cocktail, as there is more vermouth than anything else.
This makes for a very aromatic drink. If you like a Manhattan and other fragrant whiskey, you’ll like this too.
Here’s what you need:
2 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. gin
1 tsp. Maraschino liqueur
2 dashes Angostura bitters
twist of lemon
Fill a stirring glass with ice and add in the vermouth, gin, Maraschino liqueur and bitters. Stir until very, very cold and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon.
