Throwback Cop Car Spotted in Oklahoma City – But is it even legal?
This week, a throwback cop car was photographed around 30th and Penn while in traffic. This looked like something straight out of the 80s and was even referred to as ‘cartoon-like’ due to its larger-than-life features. To begin with, it certainly wasn’t just an old model being used by the Oklahoma City Police Department. This can be seen by its license plate, which is a Confederate flag. So, it looks like this was being driven around by a pedestrian. This begs the question of whether it’s even legal or not.
In short, it’s a bit of a grey area. Technically, it’s not legal to emulate being a cop or driving their vehicles if they haven’t been modified. However, this car has been modified (to an extent) which can be seen with the plate. Not only this, but it’s plausible that other parts of the car look different too.
Having said this, in most states, you cannot drive around with police headlights which are deemed an act of impersonation. There is a simple explanation though. This isn’t actually an old cop car, to begin with. Instead, it’s a prop car based on The Dukes Of Hazzard TV show, which helps explain its old-school look.
It turns out that this car has been active around Oklahoma City for years and is now part of the furniture. So, you don’t need to worry about some kind of police impersonator and you can actually get photos with it (if it’s stationary). Basically, this is yet another example of Oklahoma’s quirkier side.
