Video shows the TRUE monthly cost of living in Manhattan
Living in Manhattan is seen as an unobtainable dream for most people. In fact, even by New York Cities high standards, Manhattan is still the most expensive of all the boroughs. With this said, unless you’re in the top percent of earners in the country, sadly living in Manhattan just isn’t realistic.
This was proven by a recent Youtube video, created by Brett Conti. Here, Conti breaks down his entire months expenses and where his money went. After a brief look at his channel, it looks as though Conti is a full-time video creator as his channel has over 730,000 subscribers. This may explain where his money comes from.
Anyway, for those of you who don’t want to watch the video, here’s a breakdown of his monthly living costs:
Gym: $275 Per Month
Travel bike: $207 Per Year
Subway: $115 Per Month
Rent: $3,250 Per Month (includes energy bills)
Groceries: $487 Per Month
Uber Eats: $344
Total: $5,764 (This includes other recreational expenses)
Now, there’s a few things worth talking about. According to Conti, the average price of a 1 bedroom apartment in Manhattan is $4,150 per month which is up a staggering 10% from last year. According to Conti, he got a very good deal on his current place where he has lived for a few years.
Secondly, he also claimed to rarely use taxis which explained why his travel costs were low. However, he also spent more than the average person on takeout, as well as food costs as he sometimes shopped at Wholefoods. Lastly, he also paid for a more expensive gym due to features such as a sauna, whereas he previously used a Planet Fitness which was roughly $15 per month.
So, what are the takeouts from this video? Aside from the creator being wealthy – it shows just how expensive living in Manhattan is. In fact, this can be applied to wider New York (to an extent) which shows just how Americans are feeling the current crunch.
