Viral poster criticized for BLASTING SCAD Students for ‘gentrification’
Recently, an Instagram page called Slumlords of Savannah was criticized for being overly harsh on SCAD students in the city. Here, they claimed the students had led to the gentrification and rising living costs of the city. This was put forward in a seven page document that even asked SCAD students to leave the city upon graduation. It also featured curse words and discouraged students to call the cops when feeling threatened.
Overall, the post was met with confusion – with many people calling it out and labeling it as ‘weird‘. One Instagram account named Celena openly refuted the Slumlords of Savannah claims and wrote, “This is rubbish haha. I moved here for SCAD and have lived here operating my own business since 2018…. but don’t hire me because I’m not “locally owned”? This is giving the same energy as “Eco activists” who acknowledge that big corporations are responsible for most emissions/waste but are still targeting individuals because they use plastic straws…”
Despite these claims made on the Instagram account, there is no concrete link between SCAD students and the economic issues found in Savannah. Not only this – but looking further afield to the USA as a whole, it is also facing the same problems that Savannah has. Meaning, issues such as homelessness probably aren’t caused by the student population.
Even if you do agree with the Slumlord’s argument, many people criticized their tone for being patronizing and rude. Honestly, these criticisms have a valid point.
