WestMinster Mall Turned In To Makeshift Corn Farm
At first glance this may seem like something from a zombie apocalypse movie. However, society hasn’t quite reached this level just yet, but someone did decide to grow a crop of corn in the former Westminster mall parking lot!
It seems that nothing can outlive time and quite clearly the better days of the Orange County based mall are well behind it. The photo below was taken just 3 years ago when the mall was on its last breath and in the process of closing down.
The corn field will not remain forever, as the entire plaza is planned to be redeveloped into a mixed use center with housing, retail and offices. However, larger than expected interest rates and a downturn in office occupancy nationally may leave OC locals waiting a little longer than they had hoped.
For those wondering, on average, it takes approximately 60 to 100 days for corn to reach maturity from the time of planting. This period is known as the “growing season” for corn.
Early-maturing varieties of corn may be ready for harvest in around 60 to 80 days, while full-season varieties may take closer to 90 to 100 days. The growing season for corn can also be influenced by regional climate patterns and the length of frost-free periods.
So it seems as though the person who did this has chosen a reasonably fast growing crop on purpose. However, it’s possible that they will have plenty more harvests due to the paperwork and bureaucracy surrounding the new development and building of real estate. Until then, they may as well make the most of the free land.
