Dangerous or Genius? Portland homeless tent divides residents with unique setup

A photograph recently went viral in Slabtown which divided the people of Portland. Some people claimed that the act was selfish and dangerous, whereas others applauded it for its creativity. Here, a homeless person had set up a tent on the sidewalk. Although this is nothing new, the context surrounding the setup was ingenious.

Somehow, they’d got hold of barriers that had bricks printed on them. These nicely blended in with the surrounding wall, which effectively formed a barrier around the tent from the rest of the public. To top things off, they had also crafted a makeshift washing line from the street sign to the nearest tree which was used to dry clothes.

Undoubtedly, this is a good use of your surroundings and goes beyond your regular encampment. However, some PDX locals were quick to point out its selfish and dangerous side. This is because the barriers blocked the entire sidewalk which forced pedestrians into the road. Obviously, this is not cool.

Speaking online, one local said: “They don’t give a damn about the inconvenience it poses to others and it’s pure selfishness.” whereas another wrote, “That’s genius. The King of the Homeless. Having said this, most vehemently opposed it and saw it as nothing more than an obtrusive eyesore.

Right now, this is still standing in Slabtown, and knowing the political landscape of Portland, it may remain for quite some time.

Since this is a hazard by forcing pedestrians to walk out into traffic to avoid this illegal encampment, the city should give the occupants 24 hours notice to vacate the area. And if they don’t, then the city should immediately remove and dispose of it.

It’s not so cool when pedestrians are placed in danger of moving cars particularly young children or disabled folks. This homeless crisis is disturbing but the band aid approach will never work long term. The responsibility is on both sides which includes the homeless to dersire to improve their plight in the world. No amount of help will fix it without the desire to change what cazn be changed. Plan B please.
