Dilla Villa demolished as Amarillo residents reminisce on its former glory

Last week, Dilla Villa was completely demolished and now, its ruins have been photographed. This comes after its destruction was announced back in March. For those old enough to remember it, Dilla Villa was Amarillo’s first major baseball park and hosted a number of baseball games over the years, as well as some pretty big name musicians who used it as a music venue.

In other words, it was once a pretty big community hub. However, everything must change and not everything lasts forever. This is quite literally the case of the Dilla Villa stadium which is no more, and the picture below is proof of this.

As seen, for now at least – the stadium lights remain but you would imagine they too would come down at some point. Reacting on social media, one Amarillo resident wrote, “This is sad, but it was time. About a billion great memories there. I remember when they put a swimming pool on the 3rd baseline and I just totally thought we had arrived as a premier baseball destination. Not to mention when they had a Sonic IN the ballpark. My thoughts and prayers are with the Dilla Dude in these times.”

Elsewhere, another remarked: “Lots of good memories from that field. Lots of good games, lots of good times. Ah yeah, back when baseball actually meant something to the city. Now, we’re just a punchline on national TV to be laughed at, mocked, and ridiculed.”

As ever when something like this happens, it’s not really about the physical removal of a building. Instead, it often proves that these places offer memories, thoughts, and dreams of the locals which is why so many people get passionate when they go. With this said, hopefully something equally as fulfilling eventually takes its place.
