Vieux Carré

It’s been a bit since my last cocktail post, so I’m going to get back into it with a personal favorite. The Vieux Carré is another piece of the craft cocktail spectrum that comes straight from New Orleans. And it contains a few of the hallmarks of NOLA cocktails, like cognac, Peychaud’s bitters and using quite a few bitters in general. The drink has quite a long list of ingredients for a cocktail.

But that’s OK. None of them are too hard to find and the end result is certainly worth it.

Short post today for a busy week. I am looking forward to this weekend – Memorial Day is going to be blog writing summit for me. 🙂

Here’s what you need:

3/4 oz. whiskey/bourbon (people have strong opinions about this. That is what the comments are for!)
3/4 oz. Cognac
3/4 oz. sweet vermouth
1/2 tsp. Bénédictine (confession: I used absinthe this time)
2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
2 dashes Angostura bitters
lots of ice
Lemon twist

Stir the whiskey, cognac, vermouth, Benedictine and bitters in a stirring glass with 2 cups of ice, until cold. Strain into a rocks glass (with rocks, preferably one large one) and garnish with a lemon twist.
